Red Phase Eastern Screech-Owl!

Friday evening, a group of ten birders took a trip up to Bear Meadows near Boalsburg, PA to look for owls. We were using playback to lure the owls in, but the wind and full moon kept most of the owls away. We tried calling for Northern Saw-whet Owls at first, but had no luck. On the way up the mountain, we tried calling in Eastern Screech-Owls and nothing responded until our last stop of the night coming back down the mountain! We stopped near a shed/building where we had a red phase Eastern Screech-Owl a few weeks ago and it was still there! The bird is most likely defending territory as it was very active patrolling the area when we were there. We also heard a Great-horned Owl, but only briefly at a distance.

More photos of this amazing owl can be seen over at Speed Birding!

Yeah, sweet photos of the owl Tim. Check out the recording I made of it. Would have been better if I could have gotten you to shut up for once….kidding!

Haha. I know it’s hard for me to shut up. I don’t get out much and when I do, I have to catch up! Anyways, nice recording! I really like the sound of the stream as well.
